Today’s digital world seems empty without wifi. Not having proper wifi connection is a panic situation for us. Ever thought, what would the world like if something replacing wifi arrives? Well, it’s time you know about Li-fi.

Recently, we were going through this topic and found out an interesting article on BBC news entitled ‘Li-Fi 100 times faster than wifi’ which says Li-Fi has been successfully tested on a working office in Estonia. This article explains in brief about Introduction to Li-fi, Its working mechanism, difference between lifi and wifi and advantage/disadvantage of LiFi.


What is Li-Fi?

Light Fidelity or Li-Fi is a Visible Light Communications (VLC) system running wireless communications travelling at very high speeds.

Li-Fi uses common household LED (light emitting diodes) light bulbs to enable data transfer, boasting speeds of up to 224 gigabits per second.The term Li-Fi was coined by University of Edinburgh Professor Harald Haas during a TED Talk in 2011. Haas envisioned light bulbs that could act as wireless routers.

Li-Fi is a bidirectional, high-speed and fully networked wireless communication technology similar to Wi-Fi. The term was coined by Harald Haas and is a form of visible light communication and a subset of optical wireless communications (OWC) and could be a complement to RF communication (Wi-Fi or cellular networks), or even a replacement in contexts of data broadcasting.

How does it works?

ilar working mechanism but the thing is that wifi uses radio frequency whereas Li-Fi uses visible light. As we now know, Li-Fi is a Visible Light Communications (VLC) system. This means that it accommodates a photodetector to receive light signals and a signal processing element to convert the data into ‘streamable’ content.

For example, data is fed into an LED light bulb (with signal processing technology), it then sends data (embedded in its beam) at rapid speeds to the photo-detector (photodiode).The tiny changes in the rapid dimming of LED bulbs is then converted by the ‘receiver’ into electrical signal.The signal is then converted back into a binary data stream that we would recognise as web, video and audio applications that run on internet enabled devices.

Privacy LiFi can be easily blocked by stopping the light to pass through. WiFi RF signals cannot be blocked by concrete walls or opaque surfaces but a authentication barrier can be set.
Data transfer speed About 1Gbps Commonly, WLAN-11n offers 150 Mbps but user can have access to 1-2 Gbps using WiGig/Giga-IR.
Data Density Works easily in high dense areas Works in less dense areas duse to interface related issue.
System Components Lamp driver, LED bulb(lamp) and photo detector will make up complete LiFi system. Requires router to be installed. PC, Mobile Phones as stations.


Advantages/Disadvantages of LiFi

Lifi simply comes into work when an interested device gets the light from the photon emitter. So its advantages and disadvantages are very clear.

Advantages of Li-Fi technology includes:

  • Efficiency: Li-Fi works on visible light technology. Since homes and offices already have LED bulbs for lighting purposes, the same source of light can be used to transmit data. Hence, it is very efficient in terms of costs as well as energy. Light must be on to transmit data, so when there is no need for light, it can be reduced to a point where it appears off to human eye, but is actually still on and working.


  • Availability: Wherever there is a light source, there can be Internet. Light bulbs are present everywhere – in homes, offices, shops, malls and even planes, meaning that high-speed data transmission could be available everywhere.


  • Security: One main advantage of Li-Fi is security. Since light cannot pass through opaque structures, Li-Fi Internet is available only to the users within a room and cannot be breached by users in other rooms or buildings.

Disadvantages of Li-Fi technology are:

  • Internet cannot be used without a light source. This could limit the locations and situations in which Li-Fi could be used.


  • Because it uses visible light, and light cannot penetrate walls, the signal’s range is limited by physical barriers.


  • Other sources of light may interfere with the signal. One of the biggest potential drawbacks is the interception of signals outdoors. Sunlight will interfere the signals, resulting in interrupted Internet.


  • A whole new infrastructure for Li-Fi would need to be constructed.
